Bavuma’s Return Gives South Africa a Familiar Spine

South Africa open a three-match ODI series against Australia in Durban on September 24, and the biggest storyline is Temba Bavuma’s return to the 50-over side for the first time since December 2025. His comeback comes as the Proteas bring several senior names back into the mix while they begin shaping a home World Cup plan for 2027.

The squad looks far closer to the group South Africa want to build around than the one used in their last ODI outing against Namibia. Alongside Bavuma, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, David Miller, Corbin Bosch and Quinton de Kock are all back in the setup.

Bavuma said the long wait had made the return feel even more meaningful, especially with the side trying to keep its recent ODI momentum intact. He described the break as unusually long for him and said he is eager to be back on the field with the group.

“There’s a strong desire to look after our ODI record of late and ensure that we’re putting our best foot forward,” he said.

“I think, for me personally, it’s been a super long break. So, just to be out there again, running around, chasing after the balls with the guys, that’s something that I look forward to.”

The Road to 2027 Is Already Taking Shape

South Africa have as many as nine ODIs lined up over the next four months, with Australia, Bangladesh and England all on the calendar. Bavuma sees that stretch as a major part of the work needed before the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which South Africa will co-host with Zimbabwe and Namibia.

He stressed that the mental side of preparing for a home World Cup matters just as much as the on-field results. In his view, the process of understanding what the tournament will mean at home has already started and will continue through the next series.

He also made it clear that the squad’s core is largely known, even if some places are still open. By the end of the England series, he expects the group to look much closer to the final World Cup squad.

“From a team perspective, I mean the core players, we generally know who those co-players are. I don’t think we will move away too much from that,” he said.

“We end this cycle with England. At the end, there will be opportunities, we’ll see new faces coming in.”

“Probably (after) that England series, we will be closer to what we think we’ll be for the World Cup.”

Head coach Shukri Conrad echoed that message when the squad was named. He said the series against Australia is an important step in shaping the team, while later matches against Bangladesh and England will give other contenders a chance to push their case.

Top-Order Decisions and Selection Questions

One of the main calls for South Africa is who opens with Quinton de Kock. Bavuma has batted both as an opener and at number three for his country, and he confirmed he will stay in the top three without yet revealing which spot he will take.

Tony de Zorzi offers another option because he has also played at the top of the order. Aiden Markram adds more flexibility, although he is only available for the second and third ODIs, which makes the early part of the series a little more complicated.

There is also a few notable selection swings in the bowling and middle order. Gerald Coetzee is back in the ODI side, while Kagiso Rabada is out with injury but hopes to be ready for the Test matches that follow.

Without Rabada, the pace unit includes Ottneil Baartman, Kwena Maphaka, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, Marco Jansen and Coetzee. Dewald Brevis misses out, while Matthew Breetzke, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs form the middle-order batting group. Bjorn Fortuin and Keshav Maharaj are the specialist spin options.

Australia Tour Also Sets Up a Big Test Series

The ODI series is only the first stage of a larger tour, because a three-Test series follows and will count towards the ICC World Test Championship. It will also be the first meeting between South Africa and Australia since the 2025 WTC Final at Lord’s, where South Africa lifted the title.

Bavuma admitted that it is difficult to avoid thinking ahead to the Test matches, even while the focus remains on the one-day games. He called the series highly anticipated and said both sides should be close to full strength.

For now, though, he wants the squad to keep its emotions in check and stay locked in on the ODI task in front of them. The Test series can wait until the right moment arrives.

The rivalry itself remains tight after 113 ODIs. South Africa lead the head-to-head 57-52, with three ties and one no-result, and their record at home is 28-22 in their favour.

Durban will host the opening ODI and the first Test, so the tour begins and shifts format at the same venue. South Africa still have to finalise Bavuma’s opening partner, bring Markram back into the XI for the second ODI in Johannesburg, and hope Rabada is fit enough to return before the first Test on October 9.
